"Energy, Energy, Anywhere?"

If a person has had bariatric surgery and is experiencing low energy levels, there are a few things that are worth examining. First of all, is the person taking in adequate levels of dietary protein? On average, patients need 60-80 grams of protein each day following bariatric surgery. But, that is just a guideline. Some individuals may require more protein based upon their individual metabolism as well as their level, and type, of physical activity.

Secondly, does the person currently have any vitamin and/or mineral deficiencies? Low blood levels of vitamin B12, folate, iron, and/or thiamin could be to blame. If labs haven’t been drawn recently (and evaluated by your bariatric care team) you may wish to have these checked. As your bariatric healthcare team, we at the Hurley Bariatric Center, review all lab work we receive on our patients and make specific recommendations to meet each patient’s nutritional needs. If you’re not sure which labs you need drawn, call us or be sure to ask at your next follow-up visit!
