Get Motivated to Move!
Daily physical activity plays a big role in achieving (and maintaining) a weight loss goal. Yet, for those who haven’t developed a regular workout regimen, getting the gusto to get off the couch can be an achievement in itself!
However, summertime in Michigan is the PERFECT time to begin a love affair with exercise! Sunshine, mild temps (take advantage of cooler mornings and evenings if the mid-day heat is too hot for you to handle), and clear skies set the ideal stage for an outdoor walk, hike, or bike ride. Our many lakes, or access to a swimming pool, can serve double-duty as we burn calories while cooling off!
Here are some tips to make it easier to get your body moving each day:
- Have your workout gear (walking/running/hiking shoes, bicycle, or swimsuit & towel) easily accessible so there’s nothing stopping you from hitting the pavement, trails, or water.
- Keep an MP3 player charged and loaded with your favorite tunes.
- Engage a workout buddy to hold you accountable so you’re less tempted to skip your daily fitness feat.
- If you’re self-conscious about how you might look while exercising (a common fear I hear from patients), get over it! Remind yourself that you’re out there doing exactly what you need to do to improve how you feel about your body!
Research shows that it takes about 30 days to develop a new habit. If you start today, working out will be a habit you won’t want to break come autumn!
