Protein: How to Get It In?

Adequate protein intake after bariatric surgery is critical to help you heal, remain healthy, and promote proper weight loss. Many individuals will need to take a protein supplement for life (especially those that underwent gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y), which is a malabsorptive procedure). In general, most patients need to get 60-80 grams of protein in daily, but some patients need more than that.

Protein shakes/drinks are perfect for helping people get enough protein in their diet each day. But there are seemingly endless selections from which to choose! What you should look for in a protein supplement is something made of whey, soy, or egg-white protein, containing at least 15-20 grams of protein per serving, as well as less than 5 grams of sugar and less than 3 grams of fat per serving. Additionally, try to choose a supplement that has less than 200 calories per serving to avoid excess caloric intake which can lead to weight gain.

There are many products on the market that meet the criteria I've listed above. However, a few brands that our patients like include: Glass Isopure, EAS Whey Protein, Genisoy protein powders, and Beneprotein, which is an unflavored protein powder that can be used to increase the protein content of just about anything from cream of wheat to mashed potatoes to chicken broth.
