How The Program Works

Stage 1: Bariatric Surgery Seminar How The Program Works - Bariatric Surgery Seminar

You are invited to attend a free educational bariatric surgery seminar where easy to understand information regarding weight loss surgery will be presented. We are excited to offer you this educational seminar to help you achieve optimal health, wellbeing and control of weight related issues with expert medical care in a motivating and supportive atmosphere. In this bariatric surgery seminar, we will discuss the various surgical weight loss procedures we offer as well as the benefits and risks associated with each approach. We will also discuss body mass index, diet, and causes of obesity. We encourage you to ask questions about any step of the process from insurance to life after surgery.

Stage 2: New Patient Consultation Stage 2: New Patient Consultation

We know that weight loss surgery is a big step and demonstrates your commitment to leading a healthier and more active life. In our bariatric program's new patient consultation, we introduce you to your expert care team, answer any questions and work with you to create a custom bariatric program treatment plan tailored to meet your individual health and nutrition needs.

In a 5 to 6 hour appointment, you will meet your bariatric surgeon, dietitian and care team and have a one on one meeting with your surgeon and dietitian. Your expert care team will then provide you with a checklist of testing and evaluations that will aid you in your safe and successful weight loss journey through the Bariatric Program at the Hurley Bariatric Center.

Following completion of the checklist and insurance approval, you will be scheduled for a Nursing Nutrition class, provided with a Pre-admission Testing date as well as your surgery date.

Stage 3: Nutrition Class Nutrition Class

You will leave our Bariatric Program's Nursing/Nutrition Class equipped with a comprehensive nutritional plan that will take you from pre-operative healthy eating tips to life after bariatric surgery. You will also learn about possible nutritional deficiencies as well as steps that you can take to avoid them.

Our dietary team will ensure that every patient is educated and comfortable regarding their healthful eating requirements dependent on their own specific needs based on their preferred surgical weight loss approach. Upon completion of our Nursing/Nutrition Class, you will have a clear understanding of dietary expectations for your weight loss journey, from before surgery, throughout the procedure as well as life after bariatric surgery.

Stage 4: Pre-Admission Pre-Admission Testing

Our Medical Director, a bariatric physician, will meet with you and lead you through Pre-Admission Testing. In this appointment, you will discuss your medical history and undergo a physical where baseline labs, pulmonary function testing and an EKG will also be completed.

The Medical Director will discuss your customized treatment plan with you, and you may ask any additional questions that you have regarding the process including post-surgical expectations.

Stage 5: Post-Operative Follow Up Post-Operative Follow Up

Medical studies reflect what we’ve seen firsthand: Individuals who are committed to their post-operative care are more likely to be successful in maintaining their weight loss than those who do not complete the follow-up care.

Our Bariatric Program team is devoted to your wellness and long-term weight loss success. With this in mind, we expect to share in your bariatric program progress and discuss your journey with you at 2 week, 6 week, 3 month, 6 month, 12 month, 18 month and annual follow up visits.
