Nancy's Story
“They used to call me a toothpick because I was so skinny. But one day I started putting weight on, and then everything changed.” Nancy’s weight went up and down for years, from 107 to 289. “I tried every diet out there, but nothing worked. I developed diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, had a heart attack, two strokes and cancer. Then, one day I had enough. My doctor told me about Hurley Medical Center’s reputation as a great place to have gastric bypass surgery.”
Nancy had gastric bypass surgery on May 4, 2009. “Before the surgery, I could barely walk from the car to my house. Today, I can walk 3 miles, and I really enjoy getting out and exercising and meeting people. Before the surgery, I was always afraid I was going to fall. Today, I look forward to my future, which includes retirement, dancing and travel – something I never thought I could do before the surgery.”
“The biggest advice I can give someone is to make sure you’re psychologically ready for this lifestyle change. It’s so important to follow the diet you’re given. Before the surgery, I used to drink pop all the time. Now, I drink Crystal Light© and water, and I don’t miss a thing. In fact, the more water I drink, the more I lose, and that’s a great thing. The Hurley support groups are wonderful. They hold me accountable, and help me stay on track. Everyone genuinely cares about each other.”
“I just wish I had the gastric bypass surgery ten years ago. I would have enjoyed my life better. All I can say is thank you, Hurley. You saved my life. I can’t give higher praise than that.”
